Diagram

Half-ice diagram of Crossover Circles: Pivot Race. A line stands on each neutral-zone faceoff dot near the blue line, three numbered pivot cones sit on each end-zone circle, and one puck lies in the middle of the ice, halfway between the tops of the circles and the blue line. The racer skates into the zone and does one lap: forwards to cone 1 and pivot to backwards, backwards to cone 2 and pivot to forwards, forwards to cone 3 and pivot to backwards, backwards to finish the lap. Then both racers turn forwards and race to the puck. The first one there picks it up, skates in and shoots on the goalie; the other racer arrives just behind. Forwards skating is a solid arrow, backwards skating is a dotted arrow.

Coaching points

How it runs

  1. Same setup as the Crossover Circles Race: a line on each neutral-zone faceoff dot near the blue line. Put 3 cones on each circle, spread evenly. The coach puts ONE puck in the middle of the ice, halfway between the tops of the circles and the blue line.
  2. Race! Skate into the zone and go forwards to cone 1. Pivot to backwards.
  3. Backwards to cone 2. Pivot to forwards.
  4. Forwards to cone 3. Pivot to backwards.
  5. Backwards to finish the lap, then turn forwards and race to the puck.
  6. First one to the puck picks it up and shoots.
  7. Both racers go to the back of their line. The coach drops a new puck and the next pair goes.
